You might have heard the issue of a hole in the ozone layer over the Antarctic. By Definition hole means an empty space. But ozone hole does not mean a hole in the ozone layer. It is just a thinner ozone layer. Ozone-the greenhouse gas is found in varying concentration between sea level and a height of some 15 to 35 kilometers. Ozone is harmful when it is at the ground and helpful when it is in the atmosphere. Atmospheric and ground ozones are not replaceable. But unfortunately ground ozone is increasing and atmospheric ozone is decreasing day by day. Both the conditions are harmful for the living being.

    Through a continuous process of photo dissociation, oxygen creates  atmospheric ozone. It never comes to the ground and always stays in the stratosphere and forms the atmospheric ozone umbrella. About 20 kilometers thick this ozone layer can be compared with a big umbrella which is playing a vital role in protecting the global eco-system screening out most of the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays. But this giant-life shielding umbrella is no more in its original state.

    In 1985 British scientists first discovered an ozone hole or large thinner area over the Antarctic. If this ozone layer increases, then it would be difficult for living being to live in the earth.  If the ultraviolet rays directly comes from the the sun to the earth, then living being will suffer from skin cancer and many other diseases.  
   
   It is hopeful that ozone hole is recoverable and if Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS) are successfully phased out, then the ozone hole would eventually recoverl itself.
